Thursday 7 March 2013 - Double rainbow

While procrastinating anatomy revision a few nights ago by watching TED talks (read about TED here) I stumbled across an entertaining talk from a youtube trend analyst (A guy who actually gets paid to watch youtube videos for a living. how do you get that job?!). As an example of a "viral video" he referred to this clip recorded by Yosemitebear Mountain Giant where he celebrates the discovery of a double rainbow at his property one morning. I watched this for the first time today.

Yosemitebears reaction to the view is entertaining but also inspiring and I think we can all learn something from his sense of joy and wonder at the sight. When I'm out running I've had moments like this. And it's one of the things I'm most grateful to running for. It gets me outside and gives me the opportunity to experience the natural beauty this world has to offer.

Yes this is a picture of Yosemitebear. Isn't he awesome?
What if Yosemitebear had been out partying the night before and was hiding under a doona cursing himself for his hangover the morning of this rainbow? What if Yosemitebear was caught up in running errands or doing housework at the time of the rainbow? What if Yosemitebear was lazing on the couch watching reruns of Oprah at the time of the rainbow? He'd have missed it. But Yosemitebear wasn't doing any of those things. He was enjoying some time outside.

So I guess I wanted to post this video and my thoughts about it as an encouragement to get outside more often. Go for an outdoor picnic instead of eating in a restaurant (or God forbid, McDonalds), head out on the weekend for a bushwalk or hike rather than going to the movies or shopping mall, make a habit of a daily walk, run or rollerblade, go and play on a children's playground somewhere.

Start experiencing a few of your own "double rainbow" moments.

If you need some extra motivation you could even listen to the musical version of the video first. (Because every good viral youtube video has to be made into a song as well).
