22 February 2013 - Running with hydration

In December last year I asked Santa for a bladder pack for Christmas, and he delivered one (I must have been good!). I used this gift for the first time during my 15.5km training run last night.

For those who don't know what I'm talking about a bladder pack is a compact back pack that includes a "bladder" which can be filled with water and is able to be drank through a mouthpiece that loops out of the pack, hooking onto the shoulder straps comfortably until it's needed. They are great for any outdoor sport for which you'd like your hands free but also not to be thirsty (hiking, rock-climbing, long distance running and cycling just to name a few.)

When I set out for the run wearing the pack I felt instantly fabulous, like I was a star in a commercial for running. The full pack made a satisfying sloshing noise as it bounced with each step and in that sound I could hear the promise of future hydration which I was sure to need during my longest training run yet.

And I really did need it. Each time I got over a challenging hill, or reached a distance milestone during the run I treated myself to some of the liquid gold (tap water) that the pack held within and in being able to do so I noticed my energy levels for this run compared to my last long run were through the roof.

So the latest addition to my rapidly growing list of  advice for those wishing to take up long distance running.

Get yourself a bladder pack to help you go the distance.

**And make sure before you become really thirsty you've figured out how to use it properly. I did spend my first attempt desperately sucking at the mouthpiece wondering if I was too out of breath to generate the force required for it to work before I realized I needed to twist a small 'release valve' first. Whoops.
